State Street in Downtown Alton --
The picture at the right shows the historic Franklin House (circa 1835) and early
commercial buildings. Abraham Lincoln received guests at the Franklin House before his
debate with Stephen Douglas. The Lincolns spent the night at the Franklin House. |

Just one block west of the
Franklin House are the remnants of the First State Penitentiary (circa 1833) in Alton. The
wall has been restored and moved from its original location approximately 100 yards to the
west. |

The horse drawn fire pumpers of
the late 1800's were housed at Fire House #1 (circa 1896). |

The Hayner Library (circa 1891)
is brick and
stone. In 1990, the library was restored and
refurbished keeping the original architecture in mind. |

522 - 524 Belle Street (circa
1850) is a rare
example of Greek Revival Double House. Belle was once the most fashionable part of the
pre-Civil War street due to rail and stream travel in the area. |
