The Clark Bridge |
The Clark Bridge is one of the area's more prominent
landmarks. it lights up downtown Alton at night with its twin spans. The Clark
Bridge serves as the gateway to the region. Make sure to visit each artist's gallery
to see their shots of the bridge!
Elijah Lovejoy lived in Alton and published his paper advocating the
emancipation of slaves. He died at the hands of a mob and his press was thrown in
the Mississippi River.

The area is rich in history, dating back hundreds of years. The
tallest man in the world, Robert Wadlow, lived in Alton. Robert Wadlow was over 8
feet tall and known as a very kind gentlemen. A life-size statue of Robert Wadlow is
located in Upper Alton near the SIU Dental Campus.

Alton is rich with historic homes related to the civil war and slavery. In our
historic homes section, you can seethe home where Lyman Tumble, writer of Lincoln's
emancipation proclamation, lived. Homes of industrial magnets, riverboats captains,
and other residents of the RiverBend can be seen in this gallery.
