BERNIE THE BOOK BURNER™ – Citizens United was a case about the attempted banning of a movie critical of Hillary Clinton. Justice Kennedy’s opinion for the majority also noted that because the First Amendment does not distinguish between media and other corporations, these restrictions would allow Congress to suppress political speech in newspapers, books, television, and blogs.
Justice Alito’s question was simple: Could the government ban political books that contained express advocacy if an incorporated entity was involved?
Deputy Solicitor General Malcolm Stewart gave the answer that 100 years of campaign finance “reform” had forced him into: Yes. The government did have the power to ban books.
Bernie says Citizens United must be overturned because his vision for American democracy should be a nation in which all people, regardless of their income, can participate in the political process. Unless of course, they choose to assemble to redress grievances… and may profit… or might be wealthy.
